Victor Trip was a Dutch painter, illustrator and graphic artist whose life and work were deeply shaped by his experiences in Southeast Asia and the turbulent events of the Second World War. Born in Yogyakarta (then the Dutch East Indies) as Victor Marguerite Julien, he later adopted the surname Trip after his stepfather, Jhr. Sibelius Trip.

Originally trained in architectural drawing at the Technical School in Bogor, Trip began his professional career as an illustrator for the Royal Printing House De Unie in Jakarta, where he mastered a wide range of graphic techniques. During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, he was interned in the Kesilir camp. Even under these harsh conditions, he continued to draw, filling sketchbooks with vivid depictions of naval battles, aircraft, and scenes of camp life. These works stand as remarkable historical testimonies of resilience and artistic dedication.

Following the war, Trip settled temporarily in the Netherlands before returning to Batavia in 1948 to work for the Government Information Service. During this period, he contributed to the design of the Indonesian state emblem, the Garuda Pancasila, working under the guidance of President Sukarno and Sultan Hamid II. Later, after several years in Sri Lanka, he returned permanently to the Netherlands, where he established himself as a commercial artist while continuing to paint.

Victor Trip is particularly admired for his atmospheric marine paintings, coastal scenes, and aviation subjects. Having spent much of his life surrounded by the sea and tropical landscapes, he possessed an exceptional ability to capture the movement of waves, the brilliance of tropical skies, and the dramatic effects of light on water. His seascapes evoke both the power and serenity of nature, often reflecting memories of the Indonesian archipelago rather than the subdued light of Northern Europe.

In addition to his maritime works, Trip became well known within Dutch naval and aviation circles for his meticulously observed paintings and illustrations of aircraft and ships. His work has been exhibited in the Netherlands and is represented in collections including the Netherlands Institute of Military History and the Military Aviation Museum at Soesterberg.

Today, Victor Trip’s paintings are appreciated not only for their technical skill but also for the unique perspective of an artist whose extraordinary life bridged Europe and Asia. His oeuvre combines documentary precision with poetic atmosphere, preserving both the beauty of distant landscapes and the memories of a remarkable era.
