Oriental Street Scene

Philipp Janowitz (born Austria in 1867) was an Austrian Orientalist painter active around the turn of the twentieth century. His work belongs to the rich tradition of Central European Orientalist painting, a movement that flourished during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly within the artistic circles of Vienna and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Janowitz was inspired by the fascination for the landscapes, architecture, customs, and everyday life of the East that captivated many European artists of his generation. His compositions often depict Oriental street scenes and architectural settings, combining careful observation with a refined sense of atmosphere, light, and colour.

Working primarily in watercolour, Janowitz demonstrated a delicate and precise technique.
