Marie-Antoinette Marcotte was a French luminist and impressionist painter and watercolourist, celebrated for her genre scenes, landscapes, still lifes, gardens, and floral compositions.
Born in Troyes, France, on May 31, 1869, she moved at a young age with her family to Antwerp, where she was raised. At nineteen, she studied for several months in Paris under the renowned academic painter Jules Joseph Lefèbvre. From 1889 to 1891, she continued her training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Jean-François Portaels and the luminist master Emile Claus, whose influence is evident in her delicate handling of light and colour.
Marcotte became a member of the Artistes Français in 1901 and exhibited regularly with the group in Paris, earning an honourable mention in 1905. Her works were also shown in Brussels, Berlin, Munich, and St. Petersburg.
She passed away in Paris in 1929. Her paintings are held in the museums of Brussels, Ixelles, Ghent, and Kortrijk. Her work With the Poor at Home was featured in the landmark publication Women Painters of the World.
