George Gillis Haanen was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, lithographer, and etcher, born in Utrecht on 23 August 1807. He was a member of the distinguished Haanen family of artists and the son of the painter and art dealer Casparis Haanen. Together with his siblings Remy, Elisabeth, and Adriana Haanen, he received his first artistic training from his father and later studied drawing under Bruno van Straaten.

Haanen was a versatile artist whose work encompassed genre scenes, church interiors, portraits, still lifes, city views, and landscapes. In addition to his paintings, he produced lithographs, etchings, and drawings, all characterised by a refined sense of composition, light, and detail.

In 1839, Haanen collaborated with the landscape painter Johannes Warnardus Bilders on a Landscape at Sunset, which was exhibited at the Pictura Art Society in Groningen. He became a member of Arti Sacrum in Rotterdam in 1831 and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam in 1835. He also taught his sister Alida Haanen and the artist Hendrika van der Kellen.

During his career, Haanen spent extended periods living and working in Germany, while maintaining close ties to the Dutch artistic tradition. His paintings are admired for their atmospheric quality, technical refinement, and historical character, making them highly appreciated by collectors of nineteenth-century Dutch art.

George Gillis Haanen is believed to have died in Germany, either in Bilsen in 1879 or in Aachen in 1881.

Works by George Gillis Haanen are included in several Dutch museum collections, reflecting his importance within nineteenth-century Dutch art. His works can be found in, among others, the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and other regional Dutch museums.
