Heyligers (Heijligers) Gustaaf Antoon François was born on September 5, 1828, in Batavia (Djakarta), Indonesia.

He was a romantic painter of refined interiors, genre pieces and cityscapes with well-painted figures, perfect proportions, and details. Heyligers was an artist who sought direct inspiration in the Dutch genre paintings of the 17th century. He showed us his high skills with perfectly balanced composition, the use of harmonious colours and the workmanship of the figures and costumes.

He lived and worked in Ravenstein until 1846, after he moved to Geertruidenberg 1848 – 1857 and Grave 1859 – 1867. Heyligers lived and painted in Brussels, Belgium but in 1878 he returned to The Hague.

He exhibited his paintings in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam 1846-1891.

He died on April 11 in 1897 in The Hague, The Netherlands. Today, his works can be found in private and public collections, including in museums in The Hague and Rotterdam.
