Van Belleghem Jos was born in Beernem, Belgium in 1894. He was a realistic painter and draughtsman of landscapes, marines, village views, harbours, seascapes, dunes and fishermen.

Father of the sculptor Gilbert V. and of the portrait painter Aimé V.

Educated at the Academy of Bruges under the guidance of Flori Van Acker (1858 – 1940).

Worked at the front of the IJzer during the First World War.

Became fascinated by the region and settled in Veurne in 1921.

Found his inspiration almost exclusively in the Westhoek, the flat land of Veurne-Ambacht, the turbulent or the calm sea, sturdy fishermen figures, harbour views.

Realistic, but slightly romanticised design and impressionistic touch.

He died in Veurne, Belgium in 1970.

Work in the collection of the municipality of Veurne. Mentioned in the “Lexicon of West-Flemish Artists I”.
